Gary D. Saenz
My position as City Attorney is an elected position established by the City Charter. I was elected on November 5, 2013.
I am a life-long resident of San Bernardino; my family has lived in the City for over 100 years. I was born at Saint Bernardines Hospital, and have very fond memories of growing up in San Bernardino during the '50s and '60s. I attended schools within the San Bernardino City Unified School District, played baseball at 14th Street and Mt. Vernon and Wildwood ball fields, and learned to swim at Nunez pool. Shopping and movie theaters were always a special treat during San Bernardino's downtown heyday and, of course, cruising "E" Street was a favorite teenage pastime.
After completing my first two years at California State University San Bernardino, then graduating from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy, I attended law school at UCLA, and became an attorney in 1978. Prior to my election, I was a general Civil Attorney in private practice, and specialized in Real Estate Law; however, I have since broadened my expertise to include Municipal Law. My father, Cruz Saenz, was a long-time real estate broker in San Bernardino. He offered me a desk in his office on 10th and "D" Streets to begin my law practice. As a consequence, I began handling mostly real estate-related matters.
My goals for the City are to play a vital role in helping to unite its many positive resources and residents. With Mayor, Council and City Attorney all working cohesively, it is my vision that San Bernardino will return to its "glory days."
San Bernardino is currently facing many challenges, but its "good bones" are still here. Most importantly, I believe in the strength and will of the people of San Bernardino and their desire to make San Bernardino prosper again. We have already made significant strides in reviving our city and will persistently continue until San Bernardino thrives and is once again a great place to work, live and raise a family.Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700)
