Chief Handy was appointed as the Police Chief for the San Bernardino Police Department on October 17, 2011.  Chief Handy came to San Bernardino from  Phoenix, Arizona, where he served in a variety of assignments with the Phoenix Police Department for over 21 years.  Chief Handy is experienced in all aspects of police administration and management.  Chief Handy has served as a patrol officer, gang investigator, task force commander, canine unit commander, SWAT commander, and more.  Chief Handy's last assignment with the Phoenix Police Department was as a commander in the Maryvale Precinct.     

Chief Handy has a BS degree from the University of Arizona in Public Administration and a Master of Public Administration degree from Arizona State University.  In addition to his practical experience,  the chief also taught criminal justice classes at Arizona State University for more than  14 years.   He is also a graduate of the 214th session of the prestigious FBI National Academy.
