Lieutenant Rod Topping began his career in law enforcement in 1986 as a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Department. In 1989 he joined the San Bernardino Police Department due to the strong reputation of the organization. As an officer, Rod served in Patrol, Problem Oriented Policing, Bicycle Mounted Enforcement and the Multiple Enforcement Team (SWAT). He also served as a Motor Officer in the Traffic Division where he was responsible for training many other officers assigned to the Unit.

In 2001, Rod was promoted to Detective and was assigned to Burglary, Robbery and ultimately spent the majority of his time in the Narcotics Unit. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2004 and was assigned as a patrol supervisor. Rod became the supervisor of the MET/SWAT Team in 2006 and was responsible for the operation of the Gang and SWAT Units. He has the distinction of being one of the Department's longest serving members of the SWAT Team. During his career he has been an instructor for Problem Oriented Policing, Motorcycle operation, Drug Recognition Expert, Sub-machinegun, Handgun, Active Shooter and Tactical Firearms.

In January 2012, Rod was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and serves as the Southwest District Area Commander. He is known for his ability to work well with others and looks forward to continuing his service to the community.

Rod holds a POST Supervisory Certificate and has completed the Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI) course. Rod is in the process of completing his course requirements and will soon obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University.
