Construction at Metrolink Station Parking Displacement
On February 17, 2009, the City awarded a contract to Matich Corporation for the realignment of Viaduct Boulevard. This project is part of the Citys Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and is being completed to improve circulation in the vicinity of the Santa Fe Depot/La Placita development, and to prepare for the construction of a 350 space parking structure at the Metrolink station.
Construction of the realignment project, expected to begin March 16th 2009 and be completed by June, consists of the realignment of Viaduct Boulevard between 2nd Street and 3rd Street, and will include the relocation of a storm drain and a water main. The realigned street is proposed to be named Metrolink Way and will align with Giovanola Street at 2nd Street.
Viaduct Boulevard will be closed to all traffic during construction, and approximately 70 of the 400 available parking spaces will be displaced at the Metrolink Station. In preparation for the loss of spaces, the City has made provisions for auxiliary parking on the Carousel Mall property at the northeast corner of 2nd Street and G Street.
The City has contracted with Omnitrans to provide a fare-free shuttle service between the auxiliary parking lot and the train station. The shuttle will operate on all days that Metrolink is in operation, including holidays.
The morning shuttle will run at 10 to 15-minute intervals between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. An evening shuttle will run at 10 to 15-minute intervals between 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Shuttle times are subject to adjustment to better accommodate the highest volume of Metrolink riders.
During non-peak hours, Omnitrans Bus Route 1 along 2nd Street is available in 15 and 30-minute intervals. Riders with a valid Metrolink ticket or pass can ride for free on Route 1 on the same day. Eastbound buses will stop adjacent to the McDonalds at G Street and westbound buses will stop at G Street. Omnitrans Bus Route 1 will stop at the intersection of 2nd Street and L Street (entry to La Placita Plaza) for access to the Metrolink Station.
The shuttle service will be available for the duration of the project and discontinued as soon as construction is completed in the Metrolink parking area, anticipated for early June.
