 | The San Bernardino Municipal Water Department's (SBMWD) Water Utility Distribution Section is comprised of Distribution Administration, Service & Repair, and System Maintenance. The Distribution Section oversees and is responsible for operating, installing, maintaining, and repairing the following: 715 miles of underground piping and 15,000 valves ranging in size from 4" to 78" in diameters; 43, 540 services ranging in size from 5/8 x 3/4" to 12"; 4,200 fire hydrants, and air releases/vacuum breakers. In order to perform the above duties, these highly trained teams set up comprehensive traffic control to ensure pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists can navigate safely and efficiently, while keeping the onsite team safe. These teams must also employ a vast array of knowledge in excavation work, large mainline repair and construction, trenchless service installation, welding, proper safety procedures, and California Department of Public Health approved potable water technology. The California One-Call Law, Government Code 4216 known as DIGALERT requires operators of underground utilities mark their infrastructure for each proposed excavation with the proper color designated for each utility. "Blue" is the color that designates underground water pipes. Staff responds to, identifies, and marks the water infrastructure for approximately 7,600 DIGALERT calls per year. To assure water quality, staff utilizes a unidirectional mainline flushing program in the winter months as demand on the system is lower and uses less water. This requires strategic planning throughout the Water Department. Our highly trained team is committed to "Provide the People of San Bernardino Safe Potable Water as Professionally and Economically as Possible."
