Martin Luther King Statue

Full-length figure of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stands on a square base with sloped sides. Dr. King wears a suit and tie and his proper left hand is on his chest. A separate granite marker bearing a plaque with text entitled "The Dreamer" is installed nearby. The memorial to Dr. King was initiated by Rev. Gertrude approximately in 1971. She formed the Dr, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and Scholarship Fund to raise money for the statue. The Fund was aided by the Prince Hall Lodge 17 who donated $1,000 and challenged other civic groups to contribute. An ad hoc citizens group, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Statue Committee was formed to raise the balance of the $50,000 needed to erect the memorial. The base was built by the City with money from the Fund. The statue is approximately 11 feet tall and weighs one ton.
